How to Keep your Fence in Top Shape this Winter
Winter has well and truly hit here in New Zealand. We shut the windows, layer up, and take extra care of the things that keep us warm and dry. But while you’re looking after heat pumps, gutters and stocking up on firewood, don’t forget your fence. It might not be top of mind, but your fence deals with everything the season throws at it, be it rain, wind, frost, and sometimes even snow. A bit of winter fence care goes a long way in protecting your investment and keeping your property looking its best. Here are a few simple things you can do right now to look after your fencing through the coldest season.
Trim Back Overhanging Branches
Heavy rain, frost, and strong wind can cause overhanging tree limbs to snap, especially if they’re already weighed down. If those branches are sitting above your fence, they can cause damage if they fall. As part of your winter fence care, it’s a good idea to trim trees back early in the season to reduce the risk and help keep excess water away from your fence line.
Clear away leaf piles
Fallen leaves can trap moisture around your fence posts, which leads to warping or rust. Leaf piles also make a cosy home for bugs and pests, especially in colder weather. A quick rake around your fence every now and then makes all the difference.
Spray for insects before spring hits
Winter is a really good time to brush down unsightly webs and spray your fence for bugs. Insect damage isn’t always obvious straight away, and cold weather won’t stop them from nesting near your fence if the conditions are right. Keep toys, tools and garden gear clear of the fence line too, so there’s less shelter for unwanted critters to hide.
Avoid leaning or storing things against your fence
It’s easy to use a fence as a makeshift shelf during the off-season, especially for things like rakes, ladders or tarps. But when snow or rain piles up around those items, it can lead to extra weight, trapped moisture, and even pressure damage. Best to keep the area around your fence clear until the weather improves. As part of your regular winter fence care, make time to inspect posts and panels for early signs of damage or rot.
Give it a clean after storms or frosty days
Your fence might look a little dull after a wet patch, but a gentle clean is often all it needs. Most fences respond well to a quick rinse with water, or a mild soap solution. For stubborn grime, moss or lichen, a spray-on treatment like Wet & Forget Rapid Application can help lift it without much effort.
